| Castlerigg Stone Circle |
Castlerigg is to the Southwest of Blencathra and is reputed to originally have had forty-two stones. It is one of the finest stone circles in Cumbria, there are spectacular views of the surrounding hills, and the site is well worth a visit, even though it is usually very busy in the summer season.
Thought to date from around 3200BC, Castlerigg is one of the earliest circles in the British Isles. Although the term circle is not strictly true, as Castlerigg is slightly flattened on the Northeast face. There is evidence to suggest a round barrow or cairn once stood within the stone circle measuring about four metres.
The stones seem to have many astronomical functions which we will be examining in the future. On a more mysterious note the circle has been the focus of light phenomena over
the years, white lights have been seen moving above the stones.
