There is a well in Carlisle Cathedral situated partially under one of the pillars. It is said the late Dean had it covered over for fear of it or the water in some way "affecting the music." Carlisle having been a border city, open to inroads of every description in early times, it is probable that the inhabitants may have fled to the cathedral sanctuary on such occasions, in which case a well of pure water would be an invaluable boon.
