| Arbor Low Stone Circle |
This Henge monument is unique in Britain consisting entirely of recumbent
(lying flat) stones. It is not known for certain if the stones were ever upright, and there is no
archaeological evidence to suggest so.
The site consists of a 7 foot high bank enclosing a partially silted ditch, which in turn encloses
a levelled area. Within this area fifty large limestone blocks lie recumbent surrounding a central
group of 4 stones which may have been a cove. Excavations of the site in 1901 - 1902 revealed a human
skeleton beside the central stones.
There are many Bronze Age barrows surrounding the henge, with one built into the fabric of the banking.
The closest and largest barrow is called Gib Hill at SK 158 633, and as the name suggests once served as a Gibbet for the hanging of a local man accused of murder.

Some researchers have suggested that the site is the central site in a network or hub of sites in the surrounding countryside. An alleged ley line has been identified running through the site linking Tuplow to St Bertrams well.
The site provides excellent views over the surrounding countryside and is well worth a visit. |
