| The Ring O Bells, Middleton |
The Ring o Bells is said to be one of the oldest buildings in Middleton, and may be one of its most haunted. Historically the pubs foundations are thought to date all the way back to Saxon times, and legend has it that a Druidical temple stood at this spot in the Iron Age - perhaps a place of ancient sacrifice. In the Middle Ages it served as a refectory for monks brewing their potent ale, probably in the area where the pubs cellars are currently situated.
The pub is said to be haunted by a Sad Cavalier, nicknamed Edward, who has been seen several times, and is said to be responsible for poltergeist activity in the bar. A traditional story suggests that the pub served as a secret meeting place for Royalists during the Civil War. During one of their clandestine meets, their hiding place was discovered, and one of the Cavaliers was butchered by the Roundheads. The Roundheads headquarters was at the Old Boars Head which is on the same road.
One landlord had a stone thrown at him while in the cellar (1972), and a cold spot was discovered in the snug area by researchers, in an area known as the Cavalier's Seat.

Most of the phenomena was recorded in the 1970's and 80's, and it is not known whether strange experiences are still being experienced within the pub.
