The Talbot Hotel, Oundle

The apparition of a lady in black is said to appear near a staircase in the 17th century Talbot Hotel. She is usually seen for a few seconds before vanishing.

It is suggested that the ghost is that of Mary Queen of Scots. The staircase by which she appears was originally from Fotheringhay Castle, where she was held and eventually beheaded. When the castle was demolished the staircase was incorporated into the hotel.

Was she near the staircase when she was told of her upcoming execution, as has been suggested? Did she walk down this staircase heading for her appointment with the executioner? Could an apparition really be associated with a staircase and is the ghost really that of Mary Queen of Scots?

The Talbot Hotel, Oundle

Hi All, Stayed here a couple of years ago oddly enough on a Mary Queen of Scots trail (not Ghost Related!) Much of the building came from the ruin of Fotheringay Castle. I remember the   fire place I think in the lounge, and thinking it must have been around during the trial. I remember reception saying that there was a presence around the kitchen area. And the sound of weeping has been heard from one of the older rooms at the top of the hotel. All in all an interesting building to study in trying to establish what came from the original Castle. The Ship Inn in the town is reputed to have Paranormal activity as  for food try the Chinese opposite the hotel to steady your nerves!
