Striperstones, Pennerley
As with many tales regarding in Britain about the Devil, this one also has him carrying an apron full of stones, in this case from Ireland. He sat to rest upon what is now called "The Devils Chair" and is the highest rock on this ridge. As usual, the apron strings break and he drops his load of stones. This story is the usual tale told to explain the positioning of certain groupings of stones.

If it is not the Devil carrying stones in an apron it is usually giants. A cairn of stones upon the ridge is supposed to have been formed when a giantess who was stealing some stones from the Devil, dropped them from her apron. This time her apron string was cut by the Devil to prevent the theft.

Another legend surrounding this area refers to a prophecy that should the Striperstones sink back beneath the earth, then England will fall into ruin. In this case the Devils Chair is the stone on which the Devil sits whilst trying to push the stones back under the ground.

Shrewsbury
Raven Meadow, Shrewsbury
Supposedly haunted by a milkmaid who keeps repeating "Weight and measure sold I ever, milk and water sold I never" as she walks up and down.

Dingle, Shrewsbury
Haunted by a ghost that was identified in the 1800s as Mrs Foxhall, who was burnt there in 1647 for the murder of her husband.

The Dun Cow, Shrewsbury
Reputedly haunted by a monk. In 1980 Mrs Hayes, the landlords wife, awoke to see a hooded monk in her bedroom, bent over the cot of her infant daughter. This habit was described as having dots of bright colour on it. The monk was seen by the daughter two years later and she screamed as she awoke to find him there. The ghostly Brother was also seen by Mr Hayes and, apparently, some visitors have seen shadowy figures passing through walls there. The pub is close to Shrewsbury's 11th Century Benedictine Abbey.
