'A young man sold himself to the devil at Long Compton in the Close, a field with early earthworks near the church. He drew a circle in the centre of the field and read the Lord's Prayer backwards. When the devil appeared he had twelve imps as familiars and servants. Later, the man again raised the devil at Banbury Fair in the shape of a black cock. His fate has not been recorded.'
