There is speculation that a great catastrophe awaits us all on 21st December 2012 as this is when the Mayan Calender runs out?  Is this just one apocalyptic prophecy too many?  Will it be a case of cry wolf?  The Mayans may have been a great civilization, but they were still primitives, so why trust their judgement?  Does the calender ending means anything at all?

What are your views?

I've heard this speculation

I've heard this speculation about the Mayan calendar too.. Is there any evidence whatsoever that they were expecting the world to end? Or, would they have viewed their calendar 'running out' as we regard our New Year's Eve?

*sigh* OK: one: the Mayans

*sigh*

OK: one: the Mayans did have one of the most accurate calenders ever devised, more so then the one we use currently.

Two: no, the Mayans DID NOT expect some sort of Apocaylpse to wipe out mankind, as there are dates on stele that take place AFTER Dec 21, 2012.

What they did, in all likelyhood, expect would be a period of upheval, as, according to some myths, the pervious cycles had all ended with similar events.  Things would change, but not end.   And if you think they were wrong about a period of upheval, well, look around and make up your own mind.

What lends a lot of mystique to the Mayan thing is that we still know fairly little about them.  Unfortunetly most of thier written records were lost in Spanish book burnings.

So I can't make a 'End Of The World Cult'?  A 'Bit Of Social Upheval Cult' probably won't be as popular.  :(

Actually, in a lot of places

Actually, in a lot of places it'd probably be even more popular, it's just not as catchy a name, however....

Oddly enough, though, I suspect that there are more then a few people really, really hoping for some sort of Apocalypse.  I've never really understood the nihilistic mindset that engenders such a wish, but I suppose it's rather like the idea that if everyone else were dead, there would be even more stuff for you.

Could it just have been a simple case that you can only fit so much in a single calendar? I don't know how it works, but we can't build things that go on indefinitely- it would have to end. Did they maybe finish, sit back and say "well that's it for another 1,000 years."?

Who knows?

heard mentions of polar switch.

Isn't there a theory the Earth is due to reverse poles about then?
i.e. turn upside down on its axis?

That'd cause a lot of disasters I suppose, and for those that survive life wouldn't be the same again.

I'm not sure I believe this myself either.

More evidence?

Has the Earth ever

Has the Earth ever completely reversed polarity!? Sounds a bit drastic. It sits on an axis that fluctuated between something like 21 and 23 degrees. That might happen The change of a degree is fairly drastic, and alters things like insolation from the sun etc, and of course day lengths will change as the sunlight hits the earth differently.

End of "days", as in days the way we know them?? I'm sure it takes a while though for all that to change...
