I dont live too far away from spedlins tower by the way
You'll be surprised to know that I actually now live in Tasmania! But I used to live in Dumfries and went to School in Jardine Hall when Holt School was located there. Spedlins Tower is just across the River from where Jardine Hall was located.
Before moving to Tasmania I lived in North Queensland where there is a Jardine connection. The Jardine family founded a settlement right at the Northern tip of Cape York which is the Northern tip of Australa. The settlement was called Somerset and was actually planned to become a second Singapore but failed for a variety of reasons and ia now a cattle property only.

Neil
The Jardines also moved to nova scotia in canada and founded a town called Applegarth
Whilst where on the subject of the tower, Theres a legend that says that if bread is baked near a place where theres alot of Corncockle plants nearby (Corncockle is a purple, shrub-like plant) The bread will taste, its also believed that the reason that the millar was locked away after an argument about bad tasting bread. As well as all that, the woods witch are next to the forest are called "Corncockle Plantation"
I used to play in and around Spedlins Tower as a child, until a developer bought the ruin and did it up. There's loads of information here about the site: http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/66237/details/spedlin+s+tower/
The story about the ghost is that the miller called Porteous from the nearby village of Millhouse in the parish of Applegarth was locked in the dungeon by the Jardine. He was then called away to Edinburgh, but forgot to tell anyone that Porteous was there. Porteous starved to death in the dungeon. I remember seeing scratch marks on the dungeon door.
If I remember it correctly, it is then said that Porteous' family cursed the Jardine family and the miller haunted them. The Jardine family then got the local minister in to exorcise the ghost and they then had to keep the bible in the Tower or the ghost would come back.
Certainly there was no bible there when I used to play there and it was a very creepy place. Now it's really nice, I visited it again about 10 years ago and a bible was back in place.
Hope this helps.
