spirits of the landscape
Hello all I’m not sure whether this is the right section of the forum to place this query,but here we go. I did a quick search for the word "cucullatti", but I might be mispelling it.They are spirits of the landscape and often come in threes.

I did a quick search for the word "cucullatti", but I might be mispelling it.They are spirits of the landscape and often come in threes. I suppose I have called them to mind because at this time of year we have the three Kings in mind-yes we have all seen the amusing TV adverts featuring them lately. However, I digress. There is an interesting story that I read about years ago and I can’t remember which book it was in-(possibly one of Paul Devereaux’s). Basically, a couple were investigating a tumulus(illegally). the woman panicked when she saw three blokes in hoods/anoraks racing towards them along a ditch/hedgerow. but no matter how fast they appeared to move, they didn’t get any closer. 3 hooded figures-Genii cucullatii. They weren’t real. can we find the source of this story?

Sorry folks I should have added that the cucullatii people are cloaked(is this where we are getting the “monk-like”ghosts from?) and the sex is uncertain.
There is a famous stone carving of them that I have seen in Cirencester Museum-only little. I’ll have a rummage on the internet to see if I can get an image of them.

Here they are, and whoops there are four of them-apparently, there are usually three but they are now accompanied by the Mother Goddess,I presume that is the figure squashed in the corner without the cloak.

I know this is nearly a year too late- I’ve not been here in ages. Anyway I’m afraid I’ve never heard of these spirits, but it’s certainly interesting. Recalls to my mind a story about the Baobhan Sith of Scottish myth. In fact there’s a story on this site about them. Or I should say THE story. đŸ˜›
