Kings Mill was built upon the site of RAF West Malling, which was formed in 1940 when Maidstone Airport was requisitioned by the military. West Malling was assigned to Fighter Command, C Sector. Following WWII it continued as an RAF base and then was used by the US Navy Air Force. It closed as a military air base in 1969 and as an airfield in the1980’s.

London Biggin Hill Airport was formerly (and a small remains) RAF Biggin Hill, one of the best known World War II Air Stations from the Battle of Britain. Squadrons based here included 32 Squadron, 79 Squadron and 601 (County of London) Auxiliary Squadron.

On 15 August 1995 a Lancaster Bomber with smoke pouring of out of an engine was witnessed by a father and daughter driving East on the M62. The aircraft could not be seen once they passed under the Scammonden Bridge.

The following account was e-mailed in by one of our readers. ‘I am a retired police officer, but before I joined the police I went on a camping holiday with my girl friend and another couple. This was in June1965. We had been driving some time and decided to stop to stretch our legs.

A WWII phantom bomber has been seen by independent witnesses on separate occasions whilst driving on the A44, probably in the vicinity of Eisteddfa Gurig Farm at the base of Pumlumon 2,467ft. The aircraft flies silently and low to the ground as if it is going to crash into a hill.

Opened on 15 November 1972, the Royal Air Force Museum displays 100 aircraft within it’s five exhibition halls. This collection includes a Hawker Typhoon, one of the two remaining Vickers Wellingtons and probably the most famous of the Avro Lancaster bombers, R5868 ‘S-Sugar’ (S for Sugar), which was the first RAF heavy bomber to complete 100 operational sorties during World War II.

There are a few cases of phantom aircraft still flying the skies of Britain and we were recently contacted by a witness called Doug about a ghostly Lancaster Bomber seen in the early 1960’s.

Does a phantom Avro Lancaster bomber haunt the skies over Barnoldswick? In 2004 a flurry of sightings were reported which led to a series of newspaper reports in The Craven Herald.

Ladybower Reservoir served as a testing ground for bombers during the Second World War, and the area is littered with the broken remains of aircraft, which have crashed over the years. According to sightings some of these flights may be subject to ghostly re-runs.
