    Following the Washita
Following the Washita Massacre in November 1868 (when the 7th Cavalry under Lt. Col George Custer massacred the Southern Cheyennes of Chief Black Kettle) Samuel Tappan adopted an orphaned native American Cheyenne Indian girl he called Minnie Tappan.  She lived with Samuel and Cora whilst they were in Washington.  Whilst studying at what is now Howard University she fell ill and died. Minnie was buried in a Boston, Massachusetts, cemetery.

Sam Tappan, Cora’s husband is a distant cousin of mine.  You can never tell where exploring your family tree will lead.
