Flowers Barrow

An Iron Age hillfort above Lulworth Cove seems to have been taken over by the Romans when they invaded. The area is said to be haunted by phantom Roman soldiers seen several times over the years. Traditionally they are said to appear at times of national crisis. They have also been seen at Bindon Hill and Knowle hill.

Bleaklow Head and Surrounding Moorland

According to a local story (from the Saddleworth area) a patrol of Roman soldiers disappeared while crossing the desolate moors in the area around Bleaklow. They either became lost and died of exposure, or as my informant would have it, were ambushed by the local tribes and buried deep in some moorland bog, waiting to be found armour and all.

Birdoswald Roman Fort

This impressive site is the remains of a Roman fort on Hadrian’s Wall. The area was occupied from much earlier times and recently a Neolithic burial has been found. There is also evidence of a large Dark Age Hall on the site. Traditionally the site has been identified with Camlan, the site of King Arthur’s last battle.

George and Dragon Hotel, Chester

The Inn is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Roman Centurion, and the sound of marching feet. The marching sound can be heard going the length of the first floor which is split into about 14 rooms. The walls don’t seem to impede the foot steps.

The hotel could be built on the site of a Roman cemetery in what was the old Roman city.
