Depending upon which version of the story you hear, John Bolle is either a prisoner of the Spanish with Donna Leonora Oviedo taking pity upon him, or she was his prisoner as above.

During the Cadiz expedition of 1596, John had the rank of Captain. Sixty men were knighted for their valour during this action and John was one of them.

The portrait of Donna Leonora was sold in 1760 and its current location is unknown.

Thorpe Hall was built in 1584 for Sir John Bolle and is on the site of a earlier 15th or 16th century Hall that belonged to the Chapman family.

A portrait of John Bolle can be found in the Louth Museum along with a red silk bed cover he received from Donna Leonora.

Please note that Thorpe Hall is a private residence.
