The County Hotel

The hotel is said to have been haunted by the ghost of Bonnie Prince Charlie, who stayed here in 1745. Charlie is said to haunt many places in Scotland. The County Hotel which had previously been known as the Commercial Inn and the Blue Bell Inn was converted to shops sometime in the 1980's, though it retains it's original front.

The room in which Prince Charlie stayed was preserved but is not accessible to the public.

As Dumfries was not sympathetic to the Jacobite cause, Prince Charlie had his troops strip the roof of St Michael's Church and other buildings of their lead to use as ammunition and shoes in his invasion of England.
