St Thomas’s Church, Regent Street

St Thomas’s Regent Street is now demolished and the parish amalgamated with those of St Peter’s, Great Windmill Street and the St Anne’s Church, Soho. The church received the following mention by Elliott O’Donnell (27 February 1872 – 8 May 1965) in his Haunted Churches (1939).

Hauntings

1 Golden Square, Soho

It has been suggested that the basement of 1 Golden Square, the home of Absolute Radio and Phonographic Performance Limited, is haunted by the voices of children. The building dates from the early 1700’s and according to The Ghost Map by Steven Johnson it could have been built on the site of a plague pit.

Brewer Street, Soho

It has been suggested that the apparition of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, (Born 29 September 1758 – Died 21 October 1805) has been seen looking through the window of the building at the location where the upholsterer Mr Peddieson had his shop in the late 18th and early 19th century.

The John Snow, Soho

The John Snow public house at 39 Broadwick Street was named after Dr John Snow (Born 15 March 1813 – Died 16 June 1858), who traced the source of the Soho cholera outbreak of 31 August 1854 to contaminated water from a pump on Broadwick Street (known as Broad Street prior to 1936).

Broadwick Street, London

Broadwick Street was originally known as Broad Street and apart from being the site of a major outbreak of Cholera on 31 August 1854, about a hundred years earlier an apparitional experience was reported here. The following account of the experience was published in ‘The Haunted Homes and Family Traditions of Great Britain’ (1897) by John Ingram.

Dean Street Townhouse

69 Dean Street is a Grade II listed, 18th century four storey Georgian Townhouse. It is currently called the Dean Street Townhouse, a new nine bedroom hotel and restaurant, which opened on 24 November 2009. Prior to being opened as a hotel, 69 Dean Street was home to the Gargoyle Club which had a reputation of being haunted by one of King Charles II famous mistresses, Nell Gwyn (Gwynne).
