Marsden Grotto

The Marsden Grotto is a pub and restaurant found within a cave on the South Shields coast and is probably only one of a few such ‘cave bars’ in Europe, if not the only one. Apart from its unique location, the Marsden Grotto is also famous for its many reputed ghosts.

Clitheroe Castle

It has been suggested in Roby’s Traditions of Lancashire, that the Motte and Bailey Clitheroe Castle may date back to before 1086, being built by Roger de Poictou (also known as Roger Pictavensis). Roger was a supporter of King William I and was granted 398 Saxon Manors following the Norman invasion of 1066.

HM Prison Leeds, Armley

HM Prison Leeds, also known as Armley Gaol, is a Category B men’s prison dating from 1847. It was also a site of execution, with its last hanging taking place on 29 June 1961.

Raby Castle

Bishop’s Palace, Darlington
