Black Calf Of Narberth

Wirt Sykes in his British Goblins (1881) tells us of what may have been the ghost of an animal or as those in the North of England may refer to as a hairy ghost. However, this one, according to Sykes may have been something more sinister.

'A black calf, which haunted a Pembrokeshire brook early in the present century (early 1800's), was believed to be the devil in familiar guise. It appeared at a certain spot near the village of Narberth — a village which has figured actively in mythic story since the earliest ages of which there is any record. One night two peasants caught the terrible calf and took it home, locking it up safely in a stable with some other cattle, but it had vanished when morning came.'
