In Search Of Britain’s Haunted Castles by Marc Alexander & Paul Abrahams

I’m always enthusiastic about new books that take a tour of this country highlighting great places to visit and sites to see, it’s even better when the book concentrates on Haunted locations, and in this case focussing on castles across England, Scotland and Wales.

Phantom Landing Craft

According to Raymond Lamont Brown in his ‘Phantoms Legends, Customs and Superstitions Of The Sea’ (1972), a ghostly 500 ton landing craft was seen off the Devonshire coast in October 1959. The phantom vessel was flying the World War II flag of the Free French and seemed to be in some distress.

The Gloddaeth Ghost

The following extract concerning a ghost in Gloddaeth Wood (now Coed Gaer) appeared in ‘Welsh folk-lore: a collection of the folk-tales and legends of North Wales’ (1887) by Owen Elias. He obtained the story from Rev. Owen Jones of Pentrevoelas who was had received a first hand account from Thomas Davies of Tycoch, Rhyl, who appears in the tale.

Strada Restaurant, Bath

The Strada restaurant in Beau Nash House, Saint John’s Place, Bath is beside the Theatre Royal and as the building name suggests it was lived in by the dandy Richard Beau Nash (Born 18 October 1674 – Died 3 February 1761).

Gay Street, West Village

I came across the following short article by Victor Epstein and Christina Boyle entitled ‘Gutted West Village building said to be haunted by restless ghost of Gay St. man is now up for sale’. It dates from 14 October 2009 and appeared in the New York Daily News.

Royal Victoria Park, Bath

Opened in 1830 by Princess Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) (Queen Victoria from 20 June 1837), the Royal Victoria Park is 57 aces in size.  The following account by the author Andrew Green (28 July 1927 – 21 May 2004) describes haunting experiences from the 1976 on the Park’s Gravel Walk.

Dryfesdale Churchyard and Bridge

Confronted by a ghost: The other night (a correspondent of the Daily News writes) A young man had an extraordinary experience near Lockerbie. The Dryfe Bridge beside which is the old cemetery—has long been notorious as a haunt of ghosts. Having to cross the bridge going from the town the young man happened to glance to the right and saw a tall and white ghostly figure.
