Buttercup Lane, Dunstable

According to an article entitled ‘It’s rush hour for ghosts on our roads!’ which was published in Luton Today on 5 November 2007. ‘Buttercup Lane, in Dunstable, is the scene of reported sightings of a mysterious figure, almost 10ft tall and floating about 18 inches off the ground.

According to an article entitled ‘It’s rush hour for ghosts on our roads!’ which was published in Luton Today on 5 November 2007. ‘In Sundon Road, Houghton Regis, a dark-clad figure is said to have been seen and felt by road users.

A5 Markyate and Dunstable

According to an article entitled ‘It’s rush hour for ghosts on our roads!’ which was published in Luton Today on 5 November 2007. ‘Unexplained sightings are said to include the lost spirits of two cricketers, who wander along the A5 between Markyate and Dunstable, towards the Packhorse pub.

A23 Pyecombe

According to the BBC News Website ‘The UK’s most haunted road is listed as the A23 between London and Brighton, where ghostly figures include a small girl with no hands or feet, a figure in a white trench coat and a figure in cricketer’s clothing.’

At Pyecombe apparently a strange figure has been seen scampering across the road.

The White Way, Alfriston

The White Way is a road running between Alfriston and Seaford, which according to local legend has a reputation for being haunted. According to tradition, one Midsummers Eve, a young man, who was the heir to the Chowne* estate was killed with his dog (possibly a white terrier) near Dean’s Place and quickly buried in a shallow grave.

A4146 Monk, Edlesborough

A phantom monk in a black habit is said to have been witnessed by a car driver near the parish church of St Mary the Virgin as he drove through Edlesborough on the A4146 in the 1970’s.  The monk vanished when the driver stopped and shone a torch at it.

A4146 Crossroads, Edlesborough

The Dagnall road near Edlesborough may be haunted by a phantom black car.  In 1961 Mr Stanley Prescott from Dunstable and his wife were driving along the A4146 when, as they approached the B489 junction, Mr Prescott was forced to take his car off the road and through a hedge by an oncoming vehicle.

Dick Turpin, Edlesborough

On dark nights it is said that the ghost of Dick Turpin rides the road leading from the 13th century St Mary the Virgin Parish Church towards the Tring Road. Local legend says he would hide in the attic of Butler’s Manor at Northall and watch for potential coaches to hold up.

Stert Crossroads

According to the BBC Domesday Project, a ‘ghost lurks at Stert crossroads where once a carriage overturned killing all who rode in it. Subsequently, suicides, fatalities etc have regularly occurred.’
