The abbey originally belonged to the Cistercians and was modernised in 1744, it has a multitude of ghost stories, many of them well authenticated. Phantom monks have been seen in the Crypt area and in what is now the sculpture gallery.
The actual abbey has an interesting history. One Abbot was executed here during the reign of Henry VIII supposedly because he opposed Henry’s marriage to Anne Bolleyn. One Duke is also said to have committed suicide on the premises.
