Green Shark of Berwick-upon-Tweed

In the Historical Register of Remarkable Events by John Sykes (1833) a strange visitor to Berwick-upon-Tweed is mentioned. In September 1757 a six foot long green coloured shark was caught by a net in the River Tweed just above the bridge at Berwick.

Cefn Cave Crocodile

There is a tradition that a local man found a crocodile in Cefn Caves, which was a popular visitor attraction. This supposedly occurred near the end of the nineteenth century (approx 1870) and upon discovering the creature he managed to kill it.

Cannock Chase Creatures

Over the past several years there have been numerous reports of strange encounters on and around Cannock Chase ranging from UFO’s, a Big Foot or Sasquatch, a Big Cat and a Giant Serpent, not to mention its haunting by a Phantom Black Dog.

The Grey Brother

Sir Walter Scott wrote The Grey Brother whilst living at Lasswade Cottage between 1798 and 1804.

Mawddach Sea Monster

During the last twentieth century there have been a few experiences that have led to suggestions that the Mawddach Estuary at Barmouth may be the home of a sea monster. According to Mysterious Wales by Chris Barber a local woman claimed to have found four large footprints in the sand, described as being ‘as big as an elephant’s’.

Holy Well of St Winifred

The healing waters of St Winifred’s (Winifride) Holy Well have attracted pilgrims for over 1300 years and the crypt in which the well lies was stacked with crutches left by the cured invalids until some time in the 1960’s, though can still be seen on display.

Grafenau Phanton Hitchhiker

Grafenau was gripped in phantom hitchhiker hysteria after a 43 year old businessman gave a lift to a figure described as “a weird-looking old woman, dressed in black," in April 1975. The driver said "She waved at me.
